The Best Slow Cookers for Busy Families
Comparison of popular slow cookers.
A slow cooker is one of those appliances that can make a busy day feel a little less wild. I like anything that lets me start supper earlier, walk away, and come back to a kitchen that smells like I had more time than I did.
For a family, size matters first. A six-quart slow cooker is a good everyday choice for soups, roasts, shredded chicken, and enough leftovers for lunch. If you host often or cook for a crowd, an eight-quart model gives you more room. If your kitchen is small, a compact slow cooker may be better than wrestling a big one out of the cabinet.
I look for three things: a removable insert, simple controls, and a warm setting that does not overcook everything. A locking lid is wonderful if you take food to church, school, or family gatherings. A programmable slow cooker is handy, but only if the buttons are not a whole puzzle.
The best slow cooker is the one you will actually use. Choose the size that fits your meals, keep the controls simple, and let that little appliance carry some of the supper stress for you.
